Although great for quick extra cash, part-time employment can offer you more valuable benefits. You may look at part-time employment as additional income for the holidays. However, it can offer the much needed health insurance coverage you’ve been looking for.
The pay for part-time work may only be minimum wage at best, but the added perks can make it more attractive. Ease of entry is relatively low, with minimum education and experience requirements. Don’t forget high turn over. People are always looking to better themselves or get higher paying positions.
Let’s face it health insurance is expensive. Even if your employer offers it, you may have to pay a lot! And heaven forbid you’re laid off and have to pay for COBRA health insurance. You may want to forgo it because it’s so expensive.
Expensive or not, having health insurance is especially important for people with personal health challenges and people with children. But most everyone needs it, even those who don’t think they need it. It’s important for everyone to have health insurance for preventive measures.

Most companies offering part-time employment require you to work at least 20 hours a week. While that may seem to be a lot for some, remember the hours are flexible, so you can fit the second job around your schedule. Some companies in your area may include:

• Caribou Coffee – a specialty coffee retailer, second largest to Starbucks.
• Dollar Tree – a chain of retail stores where everything sold there is a dollar.
• Whole Foods – a food retailer of "natural" and organic products.
Other benefits to look for in part-time employment may be retirement plans, tuition reimbursement, employee assistance, paid time off (PTO) and training & development. Oh and one more benefit – discount! So when you look for part-time work, make sure it’s a place where you love to shop.
