Many people are aware that we are apart of a global economy. Companies do business all over the world. You may even work at or want to work at a company doing business in the global market, but are you global ready?
Being global ready is your true preparedness to be a part of a global job market. Some matters to consider if you are global ready would be:
Are you willing to travel where your dream job takes you? Your first step to globalizing yourself is your ability to relocate. Before anything else, you need to open up your job possibilities. A career you are interested in may not have many opportunities in your area. If you are unwilling to commute an hour plus or move to another state for a job, I would assume your willingness to relocate to another country is probably even lower.
Do you have a skill set or career experience that will lend itself to a global market? Outside of joining the military, skills or experience in finance, accounting, translation, economics or marketing, to name a few, can lend itself to servicing a global job market.
You’re ready to travel and have the career experience to survive in a global job market. However, what language do you speak? Is it only English? Sure, other people around the world speak English, so it may not be as big of a deal. Nevertheless, did you ever think, the reason they learned English is so they could do business with other companies outside of their country? So learning another language of countries in emerging economic markets like China or India can be a great addition to becoming global ready.
Are you tolerant or culturally diverse? Being tolerant is simply the ability to deal with other nationalities and cultures. Cultural diversity is understanding and acceptance of other cultures language, dress, religion, tradition and lifestyle.
While all this time, I’ve been talking about being in another country to fit into the global job market, you also have to consider foreign-based companies that have positions in the United States. You need to know how to succeed in their culture. For example, a family friend works for Samsung located in Indiana. Although he works in a U.S. based corporation, Koreans manage his company. In order to be apart of that company, he has to travel abroad, have a skill set they need (by the way he has a position in marketing), speak some Korean and be aware and accepting of their culture.
There are quite a few factors in realizing your globalization level. I only mentioned some, there are other factors that will test your readiness in being or becoming global. However, just consider the minimum mentioned to see if you are truly ready to fit into the global job market.
